About this deal

Renaissance wax's suitability for use is expansive and is trusted as a protective layer for exhibits in museums worldwide, and has been for many years. The blend which emerged from that research was ‘designed’ for long-term protection of all classes of museum exhibits. At last, museum technicians and others caring for important collections could use wax polish that neither caused future conservation problems nor detracted from the intrinsic values of their treasures. As this has been formulated for the British Museum, It is classed as an excellent polishing wax for wood and metal. It leaves a hard, thin coating of with resistance to water, alcohol and fingerprints. It can also be used to remove oil, grime, wax build up and dirt. Renaissance Wax is a micro-crystalline wax that has been specifically blended to have a crystalline structure that is much finer than totally natural waxes (such as beeswax or carnauba wax) which makes it highly moisture resistant. Renaissance Wax was developed in the British Museum Research Laboratory by Dr A E A Werner [4] in the late 1950s. It is manufactured by Picreator Enterprises Ltd. [5]

It is recommended by museums, art galleries and conservators throughout the world. Renaissance wax will gently lift the grime of antiquity and murky deposits of other polishes, leaving surfaces delightful to see and touch. Its transparency allows unlimited applications and the polish never stains or discolours. The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline. With all waxes they do wear of over a period of time and this will also depend on how much usage the piece has. When the finish is looking dull or worn, simply re-apply the wax when necessary.

Wax coatings for conservation are most widely, and least controversially, applied to metals. This has several objectives: to produce a barrier that excludes moisture and oxygen from the metal surface, to preclude the introduction of contaminating elements by handling, and to provide a protective layer over anti-corrosion undercoatings.

Renaissance wax polish should be applied evenly and in thin layers, and then buffed to a nice sheen. No matter how often the wax is used there is no loss of clarity, so that fine surface detail is never obscured. Repeated use of the wax deepens the lustre, reflecting more light from surfaces and making them more ‘lively’.When thinly applied and rubbed out to full lustre, the wax film is glass-clear. There is no discolouration of the wax or the underlying surface. Renaissance wax is free from acids (pH neutral) and will not damage even sensitive materials. For example, photographs for exhibition or of historic value are waxed to protect the image from the natural acidity of hand or environmental pollutants. The wax does not stain or darken even white paper. Renaissance™ wax polish was originally formulated in the British Museum research laboratories in the early 1950’s, in response to a discussion amongst museum technicians at an international conference on fine-art conservation.

Its crystalline structure is different from other waxes, making it much finer than totally natural waxes, providing a highly efficient moisture resistance. Apply thinly and rub out to full lustre. The wax film is (and remains) glass-clear, with no discolouration either of the wax or the underlying surface. Renaissance Wax guards against damaging effects of humidity, heat, dust, aging and ordinary wear. It creates a barrier against fingerprints and the devastation of water, wine, alcohol and other spills. With its high moisture resistance, it forms a durable, lustrous protective coating, therefore preventing tarnish, corrosion and bloom. The wax remains completely waterproof, and so retards weathering on exteriors and objects exposed to climatic abrasion.

How to use Renaissance Wax

May be used on any solid surface including wood, metal (coins), marble, onyx, shell, stone, ivory, plastics or leather/paper. Its translucency allows unlimited applications and polish never stains or discolours. The hardness of the matured wax coating gives excellent protection against normal spillages, finger marks, natural acidity etc. The silk-smooth touch of the matured wax film gives added pleasure, compared to the ‘drag’ of fingers leaving trails across the softer beeswax polishes. Renaissance Wax is manufactured by Picreator of London in a special seamless aluminium container, ensuring the wax will remain in perfect condition long after other polishes have hardened and become useless. After an hour applying the wax, it is recommended that2 or 3 further thin coats of the wax is applied, gently buffing each to full shine and allowing about 30 minutes between each coat. How can I prevent fingerprints? Wear cotton gloves when handling all metals during any kind of restorative treatment to avoid finger-printing the surfaces. Such marks will be acidic and could produce tarnish even under the wax film. Will the wax need re-applying?

On furniture or wood carvings the wax delicately enhances grain or ‘flame’ patterns. It protects existing finishes such as french polish and can also be applied directly to sanded, unfinished hardwoods without need of sealers.Waxing is the last process in hand-made furniture and in the creation of wood, stone or metal sculptures. But it is the first aspect to be appreciated by hand and eye. The clarity and lustre of Renaissance wax makes an instant visual appeal. Yes, renaissance wax is brilliant for sealing antique or coloured patina such as using liver of sulphur. Can it be used on other materials other than metal? This wax should be applied thinly and will leave a glass clear surface with no discolouration of either the wax or the underlying surface. Renaissance Wax is pH neutral so will not damage sensitive surfaces. As an example, historically important photographs are treated with this wax to protect the image from natural acidity that occurs in the skin and from environmental pollutants. The hardness of the matured wax coating gives excellent protection against normal spillages, finger marks, etc. For a guide and comparison of our wax polishes, have a read of our blog, Wax Polishes, Which Should I Use?
