About this deal

I have loved Jennie's books for awhile now! She writes like the writers of old. Her storytelling style and clear research has such an authentic feel to it.

I listened to the audiobook of this charming marriage of convenience story. Katherine has two choices--marry or be a caregiver of her brother's children. Her brother basically sells her off to Lord Hayworth, who's trying to save his estate with her dowry. These two had quite the journey from marriage of convenience to love. I am ever so grateful that Phineas is a good sort of person. Perhaps a little slow and definitely not wise in the ways of wooing women, but I think the blame there falls more to his parents than anything. I am saddened to think that it was so normal not to speak of love or affection for one’s spouse. It seems so tragic to me that so many relationships could have blossomed into more if only affection were given freely. But no matter. What does matter is that Phineas learned some things and grew a lot. I liked his gentlemanly character and desire to do what is right. Philip Townsend is too busy trying to render his estate profitable to worry about managing its rundown house or finding a woman suited to the role of his wife. His beautiful and competent neighbor Honoria would be the logical choice, were it not for the enmity between their fathers that makes such a thing impossible. Kitty’s new life, as wife to a viscount in a strange estate, in a strange village, had not had a promising beginning. Despite the arduous journey it took for his film to finally see the light of day, Folman remains positive. He is never more enthusiastic than when talking about his experience working with The Anne Frank Foundation.Kitty is an interesting heroine. She lives in the household of her wealthy older brother, Erasmus Stokes along with a younger brother, her sister & brother-in-law, and their children. She loves the younger children, but there is a bit of friction in the household. When she learns that her brother has negotiated her marriage to Lord Haywood, she is not happy but rationalizes that things can’t be much worse than her current situation. When Harry finds Anna unconscious on the road, and she awakens in his arms, his world shifts at her gaze. But before he can think that heaven has come through at last, he must convince Anna that her prolonged stay in Avebury is not fate’s way of toying with her, but rather opening her eyes to a new direction for her ambitions—and her heart. Orphaned at a young age, Eleanor wants nothing more than to settle in a home of her own. Stratford, having met once with betrayal, desires a woman who will be true. When a complicated inheritance forces them together, they little expect this to be the answer to their innermost desires. For both, what began as a friendly bet between two bored guests at a ball turned into an earnest desire to help their protégés find happiness. And if some deeper feelings should stir in George to win Alice’s heart, then he has no choice but to dampen them. After all, Lady Alice has sworn she will not marry, and George has applauded her decision. For him to try to weaken her resolve now would be…unsportsmanlike. He adds, with passion: “It’s not in my movie so I don’t think there is a way to compare and I don’t think it’s legitimate to compare, so I would never do that.”

The side plots were unique as well. I was surprised by the plot with the groom! That isn't something I'd read before in a regency and made an interesting add. It was very tough to raise the financing for the movie and convince distributors that this can be a commercial movie. I signed the contract with the Anne Frank Foundation in 2013 to complete the film by the end of 2017, and we hadn’t even started in 2017 because we didn’t have the money. This is the first book of Jennie’s I have read and it will definitely not be the last. Jennie’s writing was beautifully done and I soaked up every word of this lovely book. The characters and development are written to perfection and, though the “marriage of convenience” trope is not necessarily my favorite, I found myself quite inclined to enjoy this book. (See what I did there? 😉)Speaking of side characters--the parents drove me crazy! (Mostly in a good, this author is doing her job kind of way). I do kind of wish the father hadn't given in in the end. It seemed out of character for him, after everything you'd learned. I also would have liked hints as to the reason behind his parents coldness throughout the book. It seemed as if he'd completely forgotten that monumental event until he decided to think about it, rather than just having repressed it. And I thought, no way a 13-year-old girl could write so brilliantly. It’s an incredible piece of art. For me, it was important for Anne Frank not to stay in the movie as a symbol, but as a real person, and I think she was a very complex person. She was brilliant, she was a genius writer, she was funny as hell, she was mean, she could see the weaknesses of the people around her and threw those arrows that will destroy them easily because she was so clever.” He too was frustrated about the amount of time it has taken for the film to be finalised. “If I could have rushed things a little, I would have,” he says, sounding both frustrated and relieved. For a sweet regency romance this story was so unique! It was a marriage of convenience that actually centered around the hero trying to woo the heroine into inviting him into the wedding bed. But it was done so delicately (By both Jennie and most of the time by Phineas haha). Lady Alice St. Clair is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr, and as she is independently wealthy and may do as she pleases, she has no reason to wed. She certainly has no intention of doing so. If the marriage mart offers nothing more than the unattractive boors who have presented themselves at her door for the past five seasons, it should hardly surprise her parents she cannot be persuaded to the altar. True, George Clavering has a full head of dark hair and a smile that is as mischievous as it is attractive, but no lady of character would change her mind for one above-average specimen of the male race.

For once, he has met a lady less inclined to marry than he is. How unfortunate that she is the only bride he will consider. She wants to be left alone with her family’s castle. He wants to show off the home he has just inherited. Neither of them can win. Kitty feels like she is burden to her family. With her parents dead and her brother a wealthy merchant her options are few and her likelihood to fit in with the tons prejudices are slim.

Honoria Bassett takes pride in a household well run and cannot understand why her dear neighbor won’t make more of an effort at his. When it comes to the choice of husbands, she is too certain of what she wants to consider Philip for the role. But his tendency toward quiet acts of heroism, and those firm lips quirked upward in a grin, keep doing strange things to her heart. In the face of such an insulting proposal, Eleanor flees to London where she lands unwittingly in the home of Stratford’s closest friends. Now thrown together constantly, Eleanor can’t help admiring his masterful apologies, never mind how often he must deliver them. Stratford concedes that, against all his predictions, Eleanor has no shortage of determined suitors. a b Goldbart, Max.
