Kelley Curran Blames Turner's Penchant for "Self-Sabotage" for Her Soup Scheme Fiasco in 'The Gilded Age' Season 2 Episode 5 After a stagecoach carrying Government Gold is robbed the Cavalry learn from Joe Barlow (Dan Duryea), a reb convict, that the gold was hidden in land which is now in the middle of Indian treaty territory which is off limits to soldiers. It is why Captain Matt Martin (Robert Fuller) and a small group of plain clothes cavalry men along with Joe head in to the Indian country to recover the hidden gold. Along the way in Hays City they find themselves forced to take woman of ill repute, Memphis (Jocelyn Lane) with them and then they find themselves not only having to deal with the Apaches who don't appreciate them entering their territory but some outlaws who are also after the Gold.

Dan Duryea as Joe Barlow, the man who agrees to lead a small detail to the gold in Incident at Phantom Hill (1966) How 'The Buccaneers' Crafted Josie Totah and Mia Threapleton’s "Joyful" Queer Romance: "Never Even a Discussion" Cast wise Fuller turns in a lead performance of some macho substance, further begging the question on why he didn't have a more rewarding career? Duryea (was he ever bad in a film?) is restrained yet very effective as a grinning viper in the nest, while Akins, Beery and Pyle leave favourable impressions. Simcox, however, is underwritten and Chiles is just poor and suffers in comparison to those around him. Lane was always going to be up against it as the sole female character, it is a token lady role and she isn't much of an actress. But she positively sizzles with sexuality and delivers what the makers were calling for in the story. A sight for sore eyes to be sure, particularly when wearing an hour glass green dress. I was hoping for a good Western. The early parts gave hope, and there were many well written lines.

The second half disappointed me with the implausible tactics against the Indians, and other implausible situations. One good example is when the hero and a few stragglers are left without guns and horses in the wastelands, and are surrounded by Indians. Their solution: create a barn fire and surround the fire with the dead white bodies. Thinking they are live whites, the Indians rush to the fire and shoot the dead bodies with arrows. Meanwhile the few live whites happened to be situated where they can jump down on and overpower (silently!) the few Indians guarding the Indian horses. The whites flee on some Indian horses and stampede away the other horses! Phantom Hill is located on land newly-assigned to the Comanche and the group must deal with hostilities from them. Eventually, after the gold is located, the rebel gets one of the group drunk, kills him and steals his gun. He kills another man, then escapes with the group's weaponry, the wagon filled with the gold, and the woman. The remaining men, without guns, must again face the Comanche. After this confrontation, only the captain and one other remain alive. They set off in pursuit of the rebel. Fuller mistrusts Barlow from the start. He has another reason for that mistrust once the small group is saddled with a pretty saloon girl named Memphis (Jocelyn Lane). When Fuller gets his assignment, he’s given a photo of Barlow that looks nothing like an old West tintype. And Barlow buries water in the desert so he can retrieve it years later? It's the closing days of the Civil War, and the army is mopping up the situation out west.. Among the matters to be cleared up is a million dollars in missing gold. They have cut a deal with one of the robbers: freedom in return for helping to return it. Robert Fuller gets the assignment of leading the troops out to dig it up. There are just two problems: the first is that it's buried on Indian territory, from which the army is barred. The other is the guy leading them there is Dan Duryea at his smarmiest. Chris Evans' Dog Adorably Interrupts His Interview With 'The View': "He Needs To Be The Center Of Attention" Over at Paramount they were producing geezer westerns, with stars who had been popular when sound came in and were now cheap. Universal was trying to promote its TV western leads onto the big screen, and Fuller had been doing a good job for the company on Wagon Train and Laramie. He's young, he's attractive, his character is clever, but Duryea steals everything in sight, including, it looks like, gorgeous Jocelyn Lane. What is she doing on an army expedition into Indian territory? Shut up, he explained.

But this gold has been hidden deep in Indian territory so Martin and the four men who volunteer to accompany him will have to shed their uniforms and pretend to be civilians. A Western that’s different enough and competent enough to be entertaining. Of course, any oater would benefit from the presence of Dan Duryea. And Robert Fuller, who appeared in many Western TV series, turns in a solid effort in a rare leading role in a Western. Beyoncé Gave The Beyhive A Little Something To Be Thankful For With A “First Look” At ‘Renaissance' During Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Robert Fuller turns in a bravura, no- holds- barred performance as the complex Captain drawn into a game of cat- and- mouse with the manipulative ex- con. When Barlow murders two of the crew and takes Memphis hostage, Matt and Adam hunt him down in an excruciating, slow- burning desert chase. Claude Akins has a rather bizarre role as an Indian hating brute who has sworn to kill 10 apiece for his slain wife and his child and is rapidly closing in on his goal. He carries around a small music box that reminds him of his lost loved ones. Of course, everyone on this trip seems damaged in some way.

It's nice to see a Techniscope production at the best of times, but bonus here is that it's filmed at Universal City and features the rarely used in Westerns locations of Joshua Tree and Lake Piru in California. Margulies doesn't quite get his colour lensing right to truly make the scenery leap out of the screen, but his "scope" photography is very pleasing. Salter's score is suitably in keeping with the tonal shifts of the narrative; in fact making the film feel more like a 50s production than a 60s one. After they are captured by Union forces, their leader secretly makes a deal with the army to reveal the gold's location in return for his release; a release based on a pardon promised him by the Confederate States of America at the beginning of the Civil War.
